2WheelTimes Review: OGIO 7900 Rolling Gear Bag
By Doug Byers
When I first opened the box that the man in brown delivered, I thought, “No way is this bag going to hold all my gear.” It looked so small when sitting in the box all folded up.
I have prior experiences with one of OGIO’s 9800 Rolling Gear Bags we like to call the “Fortress.” It is so large when fully loaded that you need the boys from the TV show “Wrecked” to move a crane in to load it in the back of your truck. Too large for a 1-3 day trip, but perfect for those longer adventures when you must take the kitchen sink or maybe heading to the ISDE for a week, Motocross Des Nations or Glamis and need lots of extra gear and roost sandwiches.

"7900" stands for 7900 cubic inches of storage. That is such a smart way to brand their bags. By using the 7900, 9800, etc., it makes it very easy for the consumer to find the correct size gear bag for their particular adventure.
The design team for the OGIO 7900 truly have an insight into our sport and the style that goes with it, plus they must ride to have thought of all the spaces the bag has to store stuff. They thought of everything a rider could ask for in a mid-size roller even down to the changing mat. The overall appearance of the bag is one of a well-made and stylish piece of purpose-built gear. Its profile as a gear bag is well thought out, the bag fits between two bikes in the back of a truck very nicely.
The zippers are all good quality; the Velcro is stitched on completely and the compartments have pictures for people like me to figure out where everything goes. The Pullman handle works well, the rugged off-road wheels roll easily even in the gravel, and the bag and is well balanced. It has a good comfortable main handle with multiple handles all over it, so no matter where it lands in your truck or van, you can grab a handle and pick it up or move it. The only thing missing is a shoulder strap to help lug it through the rock sections. But hey that's why its a roller. They provided metal rings so you can secure it in the back of your truck and not leave your gear bag in the middle of the interstate looking like today’s road kill. The 7900 gear bag even has a mud flap (mat) that unzips on one side so your feet don’t get dirty. Now that’s thinking! The boot and helmet compartments have vents to allow your moist and wet gear to air out and not grow that stinky stuff so fast.
One of my adventures was a three-day riding trip in Northern California’s scenic back country. I felt the 7900 would be ideal for this trip; I loaded it up with all the essentials that a soon to be world-class editor wannabe rider might need including lots of roost sandwiches. Anyone seen my monkey butt cream and blister tape? 3-Days in the saddle what I am thinking. If the guys at OGIO can do Erzberg I can do a three day trail ride!
I stuffed my size 13 boots, helmet, many goggles, gloves, pants, jerseys, knee braces, hydration system, socks, shorts, fanny pack, and all of my extras. Although my huge boots took up some of the center compartment space, all of you with normal size feet should be OK. The OGIO 7900 packed it all and had room to spare, similar to a ported KX500 navigating tight single track, plenty to spare for sure. Didn’t think it would hold that much!
Many of the folks at OGIO ride and are enthusiasts themselves, they have gone on such adventures as the Erzberg Enduro known as the world’s toughest motorcycle race; they sponsor well-known athletes from many different disciplines. OGIO is the “In-Crowd”: they are trend setters not followers. Rumor is they like to golf too. Now there is a contact sport. A story for another day. Four…
The OGIO bag is standing up very well to our abuse and mistreatment. It isn’t the cheapest bag out there at $149.99, but you get what you pay for. We are completely satisfied with this latest offering from OGIO a worldwide company based in Utah, USA.
The bag comes with a Limited Lifetime Warranty for 30 Years! We would recommend the OGIO 7900 to anyone looking for a well-designed and rugged built rolling gear bag. OGIO offers a complete lineup of bags and gear for all your sporting adventures, find out more at www.OGIO.com.
