Boy Killed At Monster Jam In Tacoma
By Michael Hannas
A six-year-old boy was killed this weekend while sitting in the stands at a Monster Jam event at the Tacoma Dome in Washington when a piece of the drivetrain from one of the trucks broke off the truck and flew in to the stands, hitting the boy in the head and injuring another spectator. The boy's father reported that a 7-12 pound disc-shaped piece of the drivetrain struck the boy in the head as the family was sitting 20-25 feet up in the grandstands, which led to his tragic death. Monster Jam officials mandate that the trucks have a special strap device around the drivetrain to prevent this exact thing from happening, and are in the process of inspecting the strap on the truck in question to see why it failed.
Although 2WheelTimes.com can't recall a supercross spectator being severely injured or killed during a Supercross event, this tragic situation raises some questions about whether or not Feld Motor Sports should enact extra safety measures at Supercross events to keep bikes and pieces of bikes from ending up in the stands. Anyone who has attended a supercross within the past five years and ridden a modern 450cc motocross bike can see how easy it would be for someone's throttle to stick coming into a berm, launching both rider and bike up into the stands and spectators. Perhaps this unfortunate incident will give us cause for reflection of our own sport's safety measures to prevent something similar happening to one of us.
