AMA/DMG Superbike 2009?
AMA/DMG Superbike Championship Picture Still Fuzzy
By: Mike Hannas

With the power strugle between new AMA/DMG Superbike Series head honcho Roger Edmondson and MIC string-pullers Mel Harris (American Suzuki) and Ray Blank (American Honda) seeming to be behind us, not much info has been coming forth in the past few weeks regarding definitive class structure and rules for the 2009 season.  MIC's recently announced USSB rival series has been placed on the back-burner, apparently all smoke and mirrors to get DMG to concede a little power back to the manufacturers.  2WT has heard rumblings of further meetings between Edmondson and Blank in the past few weeks, but no details of what transpired behind closed doors has been made avalivalibe.

It is almost Halloween and still, no 2009 Rulebook has been released and no rider or crew contracts have been announced.  We here at 2WT are getting sick of waiting around to hear what is up, but I'm sure our angst is nothing compared to how the riders and crews must feel right about now.  It must be kinda hard to enjoy your off-season when you may just be off for good.  2WT is confident the situation will be resolved very soon and all of the "Big Four" will be racing next year together.

Rumors have been suggesting the classes will be Daytona Superbike (600 Superbike and other twins maybe with dyno restrictions and spec tires), Superbike, Supersport, and MotoST.  Supersport is rumored to be only for up-and-coming non-factory riders between the ages of 16-21 with a limit on how long they can compete in the class before they move up or go find a real job, an idea 2WT really thinks may produce some of the most exciting racing of the weekend next year.

DMG did announce a 2009 schedule at the 2008 Season Finale at Laguna Seca a few weeks ago, with all of the 2008 locations still on the schedule along with two additional new rounds.  The two new venues, Heartland Park in Topeka, Kansas and a new track in New Jersey, are pending rider safety commision approval.  Who will make up that rider safety commision is also to be determined.

DMG also revealed that the 2009 Daytona 200 will be a night race that will run under the lights at DIS on Friday Night of Speed Week. That should be interesting! Well, at least all the Harleys will still be down on Main St.
